Instructions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta until nearly done. With about 4-5 minutes to go, add the broccoli to the water, drain and rinse. Meanwhile, fry sausage over medium heat until no longer pink. Add the garlic and onion and simmer until tender. Remove sausage mixture from skillet, turning up heat to medium-high, deglaze with the Merlot. Turn off heat and add sausage back to the skillet and mix well. In a large serving bowl, toss together the sausage mixture, pasta and broccoli mixture, basil, red pepper and cheese.

  • Before you pass up garlic because you don't want the bad breath that comes with it, keep in mind that the compounds that cause garlic breath also offer a lot of health benefits. Garlic has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. If you really want to get the most health benefits out of your garlic, choose Spanish garlic, which contains the most allicin (one of garlic's most beneficial compounds).

  • You can easily replace regular noodles with whole wheat noodles to add a little extra fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals to this dish.
